THE GRID

Share what exists.
Strengthen what is local.

The Grid is OWI’s planned real-world resource network: a way for people and organizations to offer useful things, request what they need, and keep value moving through communities.

THE IDEA

A practical bridge between surplus and need.

Useful materials are discarded while nearby people, repair groups, schools, gardens, and community projects search for the same resources. The Grid is intended to make those connections visible without turning community access into pay-to-play commerce.

Grid principle: OWI can help people find one another, but a listing must never be presented as independently safe, inspected, or guaranteed merely because it appears on the Grid.

HOW THE PILOT SHOULD WORK

Four understandable steps.

Offer or request

Describe a real resource, its condition, quantity, category, and approximate location.

Find a match

Search locally and request a connection without exposing an exact address publicly.

Arrange transfer

Agree on pickup or delivery details through limited, private communication.

Close the loop

Mark the exchange complete, report problems, and let expired listings leave the system.

FIRST PILOT BOUNDARIES

Start useful. Start controlled.

PLANNED FOR FIRST PILOT

Free, local, lower-risk resources

  • Books and educational materials
  • Reusable building and craft materials
  • Basic household goods
  • Non-powered hand tools
  • Garden supplies and empty containers
  • Organization-to-community surplus

HELD FOR SAFETY WORK

Higher-risk or regulated categories

  • Prepared, refrigerated, or perishable food
  • Medicine and medical devices
  • Powered machinery and vehicles
  • Weapons, hazardous materials, and recalled goods
  • Live animals and age-restricted products
  • Paid sales, deposits, or financial transactions

FOOD BELONGS IN THE VISION

A dedicated food-sharing lane needs its own safeguards.

The Grid is intended eventually to help redirect safe surplus food. That lane should open only after storage, temperature, allergens, preparation, recalls, local requirements, rapid removal, and responsibility are addressed.

  • Separate sealed shelf-stable, fresh, refrigerated, frozen, and prepared food
  • Require preparation, expiration, storage, and allergen information when applicable
  • Prohibit spoiled, opened, contaminated, recalled, or improperly stored items
  • Create immediate safety-report and recall-removal procedures

TRUST BY DESIGN

Safety and privacy before scale.

01

Verified access

Accounts and appropriate identity checks before anyone creates or claims a listing.

02

Location privacy

Approximate areas in public; exact transfer details shared only after an accepted match.

03

Clear status

Available, reserved, matched, completed, expired, and removed—not ambiguous or stale listings.

04

Human moderation

Reporting and review for prohibited items, fraud, safety concerns, harassment, and misuse.

05

No hidden commerce

The first pilot should not hold money, charge transaction fees, or sell preferred access.

06

Visible limits

OWI connects participants; it does not silently claim to inspect or guarantee every resource.

HELP SHAPE THE PILOT

What resources should move through your community?

OWI is looking for practical input from reuse groups, food-recovery specialists, librarians, repair communities, schools, gardens, local organizations, safety professionals, and potential pilot participants.

Pilot interest is not transmitted yet. This form prepares and copies your message locally.
